Do you want to be able to take your favourite music, videos and photos with you wherever you go? Then an iPod might be just what you need.
For a truly multimedia experience, iPods can hold up to 15,000 songs with full-colour album art. With a 2.5 inch colour display you can even watch the music video while you listen to your favourite track through the unit’s discreet but powerful earphones.
Newer models feature storage capacities of 30 Gb (gigabytes) and 60 Gb, which means you can pack up to 25,000 photos or 150 hours of video into a single iPod unit. The audio and video combination means you can also store audio books to help keep you up-to-date with your reading, perfect for long trips in the car or on an airplane.
Many systems have a built-in calendar and address book, giving you instant access to phone numbers, email addresses and other useful information. There is also an integrated clock that will display time zones around the world or act as a stopwatch so you can time yourself running to the shop for that Sunday paper.
The 2.5 inch colour display screens are increasingly touch-sensitive, giving you fingertip access to play, pause, rewind and fast forward controls. You can also create your own play lists and listen to tracks in the order you prefer, save your play lists and listen to them later or listen to music while you browse through your favourite photos.
You can download music from the internet through your PC and sync it to your iPod. There’s also the facility to plug the iPod into your television and watch a slideshow of all your favourite photos, with music of your choice in the background. For this you’ll need an optional AV cable.
New models are slim and lightweight, some only half an inch thick. They’re extremely portable and able to fit into your pocket or handbag. When you’re on holiday, you can transfer images from your digital camera directly into your iPod through an optional camera connector. This frees up your camera’s memory so you can start taking pictures again straight away.
Most iPods come complete with their own earphones, a carrying case and a USB cable for downloading music from your PC. iPods run on batteries that last anywhere from 10 to 20 hours, depending on the model. Batteries are rechargeable and can usually be charged in about 3 to 5 hours.
