When is a gaming console more than a gaming console? When it’s a PlayStation2!
The PlayStation2, also known as PS2, is not so much a gaming console as a complete computer entertainment system. Its latest version is a slim, portable design about the size of a hardcover book and only 2.8 centimetres thick (just over an inch).
Built initially as a platform for 3D video games, the PS2 also doubles as a CD/DVD player. With high-end graphics and theatre-quality sound, it boasts near-cinematic realism.
The PS2 features a flip-up LCD colour screen similar in design to a laptop. It comes with USB and AV ports for connection to video equipment or your television set. And because it’s portable you can take it with you when you travel and either watch DVDs, home movies or play games on the go.
It comes with its own controller or game pad. Optional versions include pressure sensitive buttons to make you feel like you’re part of the action. For a little extra you can purchase a cordless controller which gives you greater freedom of movement with the bonus of having no cables to get in your way.
If you want the ultimate in flexibility from your controller, you can opt for a keyboard and controller all in one. Designed partly with the Internet in mind, it allows you to chat and play games online at the same time by connecting the keyboard to your PC.
When you’re watching DVDs there’s an optional DVD remote control, which gives you wireless access to the PS2’s DVD features at the touch of a button. Most systems are also compatible with an optional USB headset, perfect for holding conversations during your online adventures. There’s also an RFU adaptor which allows you to connect your PS2 to any television set and play games or watch DVDs on the bigger screen.
Another accessory worth mentioning is the Eye Toy camera. Similar to a webcam in appearance and operation, the Eye Toy connects to the PS2 via a USB port on the front of the machine with the PS2 connected to your television. Then you simply place the camera on top of your TV and stand back from it about 6 feet. The camera and accompanying software project your own image onto the television screen, and there are specific games you can buy that let you take part in the on-screen action for a truly interactive experience.
