Is it time to replace that worn out and tatty toothbrush with something a little bit more exciting and creative? Not sure what your options are?
Electric toothbrushes make use of the ever increasing need for technology in our everyday lives. Although regular brushing will give you whiter teeth and healthier gums, even if you use a manual toothbrush, electric toothbrushes generally require less toothpaste and get the job over with a lot quicker. So they’re not only faster, but they’ll save you money, too.
Many electric models feature integrated brushing technologies that provide interactive feedback, telling you how long you’ve been brushing, when to change the toothbrush head, when to charge the unit and even when to buy a complete replacement system!
Electric toothbrushes are normally rechargeable through some kind of charging dock, giving you that all important hands-free experience and letting you move around while you’re brushing. Once fully charged they should last for several weeks (ten to fifteen hours brushing time) before needing to be charged again.
The heads rotate in a combination of back and forth and in and out movements, pulsating in and out to loosen plaque and oscillating back and forth to sweep it away. Some designs have built-in timers that pulse on and off to tell you when you’ve brushed long enough, while others offer a variable speed control to allow for those with more sensitive teeth and gums.
At the higher end of the market, you can purchase models incorporating sonic technology in which the heads rotate three times faster than on standard electric units. Other features include an auto shut off system in case you forget to turn the brush off, a charge indicator to let you know when the battery is getting low and bristles that fade over time so you know when it’s time to purchase those replacement heads.
More unusual designs include electric toothbrushes for your dog and character toothbrushes in the shape of fairies and so on for your children, which usually run on batteries and come with their own integrated stands. Colours vary from plain white to two-tone white and blue/green to the more elaborate pinks and browns of the specialised brushes for pets and children. Most models are designed for comfort and ease of use, featuring a tapered handle with rubberised non-slip grip. Most chemists and department stores carry a range of electric brushes, replacement heads and accessories.
