Whether you prefer loose fit or slim line, denim or cotton, full length or cropped, there’s a pair of jeans to fit your taste, your body shape and your budget.
When you mention jeans, most people think of the traditional denims popularised by rock and roll and the fashion of the 1950s. But fashion has moved on since then with increasing variety in style and design.
The classic look is still available and as popular as ever, but jeans also cater for all sizes, shapes and levels of comfort. These include low rise or hipsters, three-quarter length gauchos with tapered bottoms, boot cut with straight or flared legs, skinny fit and even dungarees.
Quality has improved with innovations such as embroidered or stitched pockets and turn ups, chic patches placed discreetly front and back or even cut outs to expose bits of your leg.
Jeans are made from denim or a combination of denim and lycra, used particularly in relaxed or stretch pants for ease of movement. In most cases it’s possible to choose the level of rise (how far up or how low the jeans sit on the waist) and length of inseam. Many styles are available in classic denim colours including the distressed look or an antique wash, while the more adventurous among you might opt for white, turquoise, hot pink, black or purple, all available with matching accessories.
As well as the traditional denim standby, manufacturers produce cargo jeans in 100% cotton, which are loose fitting and practical for everyday wear. Utility trousers are increasingly popular too, made from heavy cotton canvas and featuring elasticated toggle adjusters. These have enough pockets to accommodate all your gadgets and accessories such as mobile phones, iPods and MP3 players.
In the same vein, you can purchase camouflage trousers in either standard or washed-out print, or fold over trousers with a folded over waistband which are usually made from a softer fabric.
For men there are the usual style choices with an added tall category, while women’s jeans include a proportion range to match the particular body shape and variations in leg length for gaucho and Capri styles. Jeans for women also tend to be more decorative with floral embroidery and stitching incorporated into pockets, turn ups and hem lines on the bottom of the legs.
Most jeans come with a zip front and plenty of pockets, which tend to be flush in denims while utility and cargo varieties generally use Velcro or zips.
