Wouldn’t it be great if there was some kind of handy gadget that would let you wash your car, clean your windows, remove dirt and grime from your patio and keep all your garden surfaces looking like new in one easy, convenient system? Well, there is, and it’s called a pressure washer.
Pressure washers come in a choice of colours including yellow, black, red and green. Most domestic models are electric and come fitted as standard with a trigger gun with detergent nozzle, a high pressure spray lance, high pressure hose and an adjustable nozzle. These are powerful enough to remove dirt and caked on mud from walls, bikes, boats, caravans, garden furniture, windows and conservatories. They are also equally effective on a variety of surfaces such as wood, tiles, stone and concrete.
Most designs include a car wash brush to make cleaning your motor easy and (almost) enjoyable. Or you can purchase a patio cleaning attachment which stops splash back and works like one of those old fashioned floor polishers. Among the available accessories you can buy are cleaning tablets, special premixed detergent and detergent bottles.
Electric machines operate in the range of between 1000 and 3000 watts providing enough power for even the most stubborn stains. Other features include an auto start/stop facility to save power and wear on the motor, a built-in hose reel for easy storage and a built-in detergent tank. Most units have variable pressure control which provides standard and turbo functions, changeable at the flick of a switch located on the trigger gun itself.
Portable versions are available as back pack or hand carried varieties. These are great for watering the garden or giving the car a quick blast, but they aren’t powerful enough for the big jobs. They’re perfect for working in remote areas where there’s no electrical supply but limited to how much liquid they hold and how much pressure they produce.
For serious dirt removal you can also get a hot water steam pressure washer, ideal for the small businessman who needs to clean several company vehicles regularly. These offer a lockable machine cover, a storage compartment for nozzles, tools and hoses and tend to be efficient and reliable in performance.
For industrial purposes, you can purchase a petrol model which is larger, heavier and holds more liquid for longer continuous use. This has handle-bar grips and hefty wheels to make it easier to manoeuvre.
