Is hard or bad-tasting water preventing you from enjoying a refreshing drink or a decent cup of tea? Need a remedy without having to go out and buy bottled water? Then maybe you should invest in a water filter.
When you think about water filters, most people will probably imagine the jugs that fit on the door on the inside of the fridge. These work with cartridges and keep a small, fresh supply on hand for emergencies. But these are only one of a large range of options.
Water filters are available that fit under your sink but require no plumbing skills to install. All fittings and instructions are supplied with the unit, and these will normally remove bad tastes, odours, chemicals and algae leaving your water clean, fresh and tasty.
‘Whole house’ filters are fitted directly into the mains water supply and filter the water as it enters your house. You can choose the cartridges that best meet your individual needs, such as for softening water, removing unpleasant tastes or smells or destroying over-active chlorines and chemicals.
For households with a particular water supply problem or those who get water from a well, the reverse osmosis unit repels the impurities from the water and stores clean drinking water in a pressure vessel for on-tap delivery. These units also fit under the sink and are easy to install with the included kit.
The fridge filter is becoming increasingly popular as more and more appliances are being made that incorporate chilled drinks units. These tend to be activated carbon filters with a flexible pipe fitting size of ¼ inch, the standard size for connection to most fridges.
There is also an ultra violet filter (under sink fitting again) that sterilizes the water with the aid of a 16 watts output. This might be particularly useful for families with young children or older people, and would be ideal for those of you who give a great deal of thought and concern to what you put in your bodies.
All water filters work in the same way, using large or small cartridges of one type or another to clean your water. It’s important to remember though, that these cartridges might only fit the unit they’re specifically made for, so be certain to buy the correct replacements. Also make sure you change the cartridge regularly, 3 to 6 months for most models, monthly for the smaller jugs.
