Like Motorola, Blackberry is a mobile phone manufacturer. They make and sell phones and let you decide which network you want to subscribe to. It makes you feel like you’re buying a phone (which you are) instead of like you’re signing away your house.
Blackberry phones typically feature large high resolution screens and are generally SIM free. SIM free (also known as unlocked) phones are not linked to any particular network, so you can purchase a SIM card or a pay as you go SIM card from the network of your choice and pop it into your Blackberry phone.
Most models come with 32MB Flash memory and 4MB SRAM for storing photos, phone numbers, addresses, and so on. They also include an easy to use sure Type QWERTY keyboard which is less fashionable these days but may be easier to use if you spend a lot of time in front of a PC. Most phones can show you they’re switched on by a tone, by being made to vibrate, via a light on the screen or an LED indicator.
Some designs incorporate a thumb-operated track wheel to make navigation as simple as possible and an ESC (escape) key for emergency exits or to get back to your main menu in a hurry. You can choose between icons or text based home screen with menus to help you find your way to the various functions, and most units are capable of storing and playing polyphonic ringtones.
Most models come with a built-in personal organizer and address book and many have the facility of being able to sync them up to your PC for downloading songs, videos, screen savers, and so on. Some units also incorporate MMS picture messaging, while others are GPRS and WAP compatible.
Blackberry mobiles are normally Bluetooth compatible for wireless connectivity to PCs and other devices. They run on a removable, rechargeable lithium battery and come with an integrated speaker and microphone and even a hands free speaker phone. Accessories include car kits and hands free headsets for use with Bluetooth compatible models.
The T-mobile network offers free Blackberry phones with certain monthly rental packages. Typical deals include 12 months ½ price rental with 50MB instant email capacity and free voicemail facility. But if it’s just the phone you’re after, it might be better to shop around to get the type of package that suits you and your budget.
