Nokia phones are generally compatible with most networks and feature monthly contracts, pay as you go models and SIM free handsets. SIM free means that the phone is not set to work with a particular network, so you can purchase a pay as you go SIM card (which you can also buy from Nokia) from the network that offers you the best deal. That gives you the complete freedom to choose your phone company and the service plan that offers you the best value and easiest top-up method.
Nokia phones tend to be linked to the 3 phone network, which is fine if you don’t mind being told who to subscribe to. On the positive side, this gives you access to 3’s Music Store for song downloads and offers a direct printing service from your home, your office and many retail shop kiosks.
Many of Nokia’s phones are photo and video capable with immediate access to email. On some models you can record up to an hour’s worth of video and watch it via the full screen video playback feature. There is also a Multimedia Card (MMC) slot for data storage and transfer, useful if you have a lot of songs and want to be able to listen to a different album instantly and effortlessly. Just pop the MMC into the slot and load up your tunes.
Most models are Bluetooth compatible and many designs incorporate a full speed USB 2 connection. More expensive Nokia phones also come with a digital camera that has a 6 X zoom facility, not something you find as standard on other makes and models.
As with all mobile phones, you get what you pay for with a Nokia. Flip top phones and high specifications including all the connectivity and multimedia capabilities tend to be expensive, and their alliance with the 3 network could be seen as a limitation by some. If you fall into that category but like the look and feel of the phone, try talking the supplier into providing you with the phone of your choice (or the next best model) with one of Nokia’s pay as you go SIM free models or a pay as you go SIM card option.
All the usual accessories for hands free operation and in-car charging are available, and most phones have text messaging, answer phone and address book facilities on board when you purchase the unit.
