Do you need a way to keep in shape without having to leave the house? A way to keep fit that you can do sitting down, at any time of day? Then you should consider getting yourself a rowing machine.
There are three main types of rowing machines, classified by the method of resistance they employ. These are air (or hydraulic), magnetic and water resistance.
Entry level designs are compact and foldable, so you can pack the machine up when you’re finished exercising, perfect if space is at a premium. These are ideal for home fitness and tend to use air resistance. Most models have a central pull handle to mimic rowing action.
Most rowing machines are mains powered and constructed from aluminium and tubular steel, usually finished in silver or chrome effect. They also make use of integrated foot plates with Velcro straps to prevent your feet from slipping out, and roller mounted padded seats to make your workout as comfortable as possible. If you prefer, you can also purchase machines with two moving side handles to make it seem like you have an oar in each hand.
More expensive models operate by means of a variable air resistance flywheel. This gives you silent running with long, smooth rowing movements so you can concentrate on your strokes and not the sound of the machine. Some models include performance monitors which measure distance and rowing efficiency. Other designs will record your favourite workout sessions which you can load up at a later date.
The water rowers make use of water resistance for the ultimate in realism. This is achieved by way of a water container stored discreetly within the unit’s frame. Water rowers also tend to be constructed from high quality wood instead of steel, so they can be as much a piece of furniture as an aid to exercise.
For something a little different, you can also buy a 2 in 1 cycle rower which can be used as a rowing machine or an exercise bike. These feature adjustable magnetic resistance (in case you want more or less) and produce a smooth rowing and pedalling action. There’s a padded seat which is height adjustable and the on-board multifunction computer lets you easily change from cycle to rower. You get two machines (and two workouts!) for the price of one, and most units come with a training guide to help you get started.
